Sypereddi and Dusichka Take 1st Place at NHD National Competition

Team Lawrence High had an exciting outcome at the National History Day (NHD) virtual National competition, Saturday, June 19! Over 3,200 students worldwide qualified for the finals.

Graduating seniors and NHD Club Co-Presidents, Amritha Sypereddi and Dessy Dusichka, received top honors in the Senior Group Website category. Their website, "Communicating the Voices of the Unheard: The Photography of Dorothea Lange," was ranked 1st in the world and received the NEH Scholar Gold Medal of distinction (National Endowment for the Humanities)! Rising senior, Jack Granahan, was a Top Ten Finalist in the Senior Individual Performance category! Jack's performance, "Texas v. Johnson: Communication Through Controversial Means," was ranked 7th in the world!

Rising senior, Miduna Rishindran, and graduating senior, Akshaya Shivaparan, received Top Thirty honors with their Senior Group Exhibit, "Jacob Riis: The Key to Understanding How the Other Half Lives." Miduna's and Akshaya's exhibit was also selected to represent New Jersey in the Smithsonian Museum of American History's NHD virtual display until June 29. Rising senior, Adithi Ponakampalli, and graduating senior, Bhavya Sahay, also received Top Thirty honors with their Senior Group Exhibit, "Marsha P. Johnson: Advocating for Gay and Transgender Equality and Protection."

The NHD Club will take a well-earned break until September! Next year's 2022 NHD theme is: "Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences." Priscilla Taylor is the LTPS NHD Club mentor.
