Second Step Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum
Second Step is a program rooted in social-emotional learning that promotes school success, school connectedness and a safe and respectful school climate. More than just a classroom curriculum, Second Step's holisitic approach helps create a more empathetic society by providing education professionals, families, and the larger community with tools to enable them to take an active role in the social-emotional growth of our children. This is accomplished by directly teaching students the skills that strengthen their ability to learn, have empathy, manage emotions, and solve problems.
Due to the importance of these skills, Second Step is now integrated into all Kindergarten through Third grade classes at LES. The four units are taught simultaneously throughout the building, with reinforcement provided during Morning News announcements, school-wide assembly activities, Closing Circle questions, and songs taught in Music class. Posters reminding students of these skills hang throughout the buildling, and Homelinks are sent home to inform parents and encourage practice beyond the school day. LES has also created a social-emotional library for each grade level, comprised of books that support, reinforce and extend our Second Step themes.
