SLACKWOOD IS A STATE SCHOOL OF CHARACTER! - The New Jersey Alliance for Social, Emotional and Character Development has Selected the Slackwood Elementary School as a 2012 New Jersey School of Character. This is an amazing honor that should make everyone in the Slackwood Community proud. Kindergarten Registration is Open - If you have a child who is turning 5 before October 1, 2012, you may register him/her for Kindergarten by using the on-line registration. Go under the Parents tab on this site or click on : http://www.ltps.org/parents.cfm?subpage=8066 We will be holding on-site registration on February 24, 2012 between the hours of 3-5 PM. If you have a child who will be eligible or know a family who has a child, please let them know. 2nd Marking Period Ends - January 30 marks the end of the 2nd Marking period. Report cards will be sent home on or before February 10. Relay for Life - Slackwood is sponsoring a team for this year's Relay for Life which will be held on May 18 at the High School. You can join our team or sponsor one of our members at: : http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLFY12EA?pg=team&fr_id=36588&team_id=1068675 Play Outdoors - Please remember, dress your child in warm clothing, including hats and gloves. Unless the weather is extreme, we will have morning gathering outside and students will have the opportunity for recess outside. Each day, we check the temperature and the wind chill to make a determination whether we will gather outside or come inside. Decisions are also made during the day about lunch time recess. St. Baldricks - Hayden Clark, a first grade student in Mr. Acampora's classroom has joined Slackwood up to participate in the St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraiser. Students and Staff will get sponsors before getting their heads shaved for charity. This event will raise money for childhood cancer research. Please click on this link to join up or sponsor someone. : http://www.stbaldricks.org/teams/mypage/73570/2012RESPONSIBILITY is the Pillar that students will be working on. Look for students who are especially responsible. General Information IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM THE PRINCIPAL: Electronic/Tech devices such as Game Boys, Nintendo DS, personal tablets, and cell phones should not be brought to school. If your child must have a cell phone or some other personal electronic device, please contact your child’s teacher with a reason for sending this device. Otherwise, we do not want these devices in school. I can give many reasons for this new rule and I would be glad to discuss these with any parent or child. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Parent Drop Off – Please remember that if you are dropping of your child in the morning, you can pull up near the playground area and staff will help your child get to morning gathering. Students are asked to walk on the walkway, next to the fence. If you need to get out of the car, parents are asked to park at the far end of the lot, east of the soccer goal. You may park and walk your child to their line or come to the office if you have business in the school. We go outside at Slackwood – Unless it is extremely wet or extremely cold, students will go outside for recess. We believe that the students need to get outside and play. Please make sure your children dress appropriately as we will only stay inside for extreme weather. Parents: School begins at 8:00 AM. Unless there is inclement weather, we will have outdoor gathering. Teachers will be picking up their students at 7:55 so that they are ready to learn at 8 AM. If your child arrives after 8, please sign them in as late in the main office. All parents must report to the main office if you are visiting the school. Safety First! Parents are requested to call the Tel-safe number when their children will be late or absent from school. The Tel-safe phone number is 671-5468. Parents are asked to provide the following information: their name, their child's name, their child's teacher's name and grade level and the dates on which their child will be absent. Teachers should record absences on attendance system. Teachers should continue to receive a written note from the parents upon the child's return to school. This should be sent to the office. After a child has 3 unexcused (or one suspicious) absence, teachers are asked to notify the principal. All absences will be verified and copied to each teacher daily. Three times late will convert into 1 absence; 28 absences will result in retention.
